Nuclear Polling in Solomon: Majority Harbour Doubts over prospect of a Nuclear Territory

Posted by mcarthurriver on November 22, 2007

New polling released today by the Environment Centre of the NT (ECNT) shows strong community concern over federal government plans for more nuclear activities on and around Darwin Harbour.

Over two thirds of people polled were opposed to nuclear waste ships using the Harbour, three quarters opposed uranium processing in the Harbour region and a massive 88% oppose any plans to import and store international radioactive waste in the NT.

The polling has been conducted by ECNT over the past two weeks to gauge community opinion on nuclear issues ahead of Saturday’s election and is based on a commercial poll sample size chosen at random from across the Solomon electorate.

“Nuclear waste is clearly on the nose with people right across Darwin and Palmerston,” said ECNT co-ordinator Charles Roche.

“People want less nuclear activity on and around the Harbour and no ships dropping the nation’s – or the world’s – radioactive waste on Darwin”.
The poll result follows a series of ECNT radio advertisements and the distribution of material highlighting the threat posed to Darwin Harbour by the federal government’s radioactive waste dump plan.
“With just a few days to ‘the one poll that matters’ all the candidates would do well to heed the clear no radioactive waste message of this poll,” said Charles Roche.

Polling results

Note: # In June 2007 the Liberal Party federal council passed a resolution that supports Australia expanding its current nuclear industry to incorporate the entire uranium fuel cycle and worldwide nuclear waste storage.

Walk Against Warming - A Great Afternoon

Posted by mcarthurriver on November 12, 2007

IMG_3832Yesterday, Sunday 11th November saw around 350 people take to the foreshore to support the need for governement action on climate change.  It was a lovely afternoon, and the threat of rain did little to deter walkers from participating in this important event.

Organinsed by Paul Hastings of the Environment Centre Northern Territory the event saw walkers travel from the carpark of the Nightcliff Jetty down to the Nightcliff pool where there were stalls, entertainment, tasty food and a dip in the pool.

Congratulations to Paul who did a fanastic job of organising everything and THANKS to EVERYONE who turned up and made this event a sucess!!

Where Your Vote Goes

Posted by mcarthurriver on November 12, 2007

There’s often confusion and speculation about who your vote will go to if the party you select misses out.  The Australian Electoral Commission website can clear all of it up for us.  By placing a ‘1′ in only one box above the line you are adopting that parties preferences, for instance; by voting 1 for the Green party your first and second preference will go to Tyley and Goodluck respectively, with your third and forth going to the two candidates for the Democrats. The other candidates are numbered according to the Greens ideals, leaving the Citizens Electoral Council in last place.

To inform yourself of what your vote will mean view the Northern Territory Group Voting Tickets here.

Environment campaigner confronts Howard

Posted by mcarthurriver on November 5, 2007

From abc.net.au/news

Prime Minister John Howard has been heckled by an environment campaigner on his morning walk along the Nightcliff foreshore in Darwin.

Charles Roche from the Northern Territory Environment Centre confronted Mr Howard about the Coalition’s position on climate change.

Mr Roche then asked why the Government supports land clearing on the Tiwi Islands to the north of Darwin, where 28,000 hectares have been cleared so far.

“It’s one of the largest sources of land clearing in the whole of Australia and your Government has actively supported it,” he said.

“And you’re doing absolutely nothing to combat it.”

Mr Howard said there needs to be a balance between the environment and jobs.
